Hi. I would like to take one head and soft box or umbrella on location somewhere, let's say the park, to shoot portraits. What's the best way to do this, or is it possible to do this without an outlet? Are there portable battery packs for power packs and strobes? Any info you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So you are working on location with no access to an electrical outlet or a generator. Well the best way to deal with this is to buy yourself a couple of Quantum Q flashes. Don't misunderstand though, these flashes are strong, and most flashers they are bare bulb and they can generate 400 watt/second. They also have all kinds of accesories such as diffusers which act like soft boxes. Furthermore these flashes can be mounted on tripods, and you can trigger them remotely if you purchase the correct accesories. Although they arent exactly the cheapest solution, it is one of the best solutions. Try getting them used if possible they have them on occasion at keh.com or on ebay.

if you dont want to go through the trouble of portable battery packs there is another option. you could use a metz flash. you can either put directly on the camera or you could do an even better thing and put it on a seperate tripod or hold it where you want it. it works as a fill in light or as a main light depending on what you are going for. the battery is rechargable. to me its much easier and more convenient than bringing along softboxes. you can also get diffusion material for the light. or you can make your own with different kinds of papers.
