Saying The Year In Spanish

The first one.

ANY NUMBER in Spanish has to be broken down into what it represents.

So think of 1940 as...

1000
900
40

Let's say, as far as 402985, you would say,

400,000
2,000
900
80
5

Get it?

Good luck.

Its the first one.
I can understand why you would think the second one, cause in the second one your mixing how you say in english with how you say in spanish.
