Atheism is a negative view, or nonbelief: it denies the existence of God. Secular humanism is a positive view, or belief: it affirms the value of humanity in a godless world.

Some people consider babies to be atheists; no one, however, would consider babies to be secular humanists, because secular humanism is a specific belief or world-view.

You can be agnostic or simply unchurched, and be a secular humanist. Many non-religious people do not believe there is NO God, they are simply not convinced by their observation or by religion. But they still want to give to charity, volunteer, and be involved in "do-gooding."

I will try not to write a book on the subject like many folks here, simply put:

secular humanism talks about what a person does believe.

Atheism merely talks about what a person doesnt believe.

Edit: Please Ignore Poohcat. Aetheists are not against god, they dont believe in god. Such claims are worse then people claiming christians are pro slavery because the bible clearly outlines HOW slaves are meant to be handled and sold. (yes its in there look it up)

Secular humanism is just someone who wants to do his own thing and leave God out of it. Atheism on the other hand is someone who is "against" God and therefore against any person who professes to love God, no matter which religion it is.
