Rigor mortis sets in within 3-4 hours of death, the body limbs are completely stiff by about 12 hours after death and it generally lasts 36 hours before the body relaxes.

If a funeral is held shortly after death while rigor is still in effect, the body may need to be manipulated to enable dressing and positioning of the hands and head for viewing purposes. If limbs are too stiff to reposition, then it may be necessary for them to be broken.

With any luck, they get you before you "turn hard" (I believe you mean when rigor mortis sets in).

If you were so far gone that they didn't find you until after you turned hard, chances are that you would have a closed casket anyway, and not need to be dressed for show.

It is only hard for a certain period of time, then it goes limp again.
