My Chinese teacher said Beijing is better, but why? Her English and my English don't click and I can't ask her too many questions during class anyway.

Beijing is a more classical city. It is less modern, but a more historical and beautiful city and a better place for tourism. The old palaces and the Great Wall are in Beijing.

Generally, Shanghai is the economic center of China. Shanghai is amazingly modern in some quarters. You couldn't tell if you were Shanghai or if you wer in New York in some places.

If you were talking about living standards, I would need to say Shanghai has a genrally higher living standard. Shanghai is more open to the outside world, and is a little more "free" than Beijing, in terms of restrictions placed by the Communists. Generally, Shanghai is more advanced. But the difference is not big. If Shanghai was New York or Los Angeles, Beijing would be San Francisco, Seattle, or Dallas. The diiference is small.

Both cities are super big. There are modern areas, and there are very old, austere places in both cities. Beijing is a more Chinese city.

Personally, I prefer Beijing because of the Chinese feel. Beijing will also grow faster than Shanghai the next two years because they must make the city ready for the 2008 Olympics.

Shanghai is genreally a little more advanced and a little more, may I say, civilized. But if you are living in the high-end areas, it won't make a difference.

Shanghai is much cosmpolitan and far less polluted than Beijing. It may be more expensive. Its like living in New York(Shanghai) vs Wash D.C,(Beijing) except the pollution in Beijing is like nothing I have seen in my life--far worse than any U. S.city. But Beijing is a fascinating city.

I think Shanghai is better. It's more developed. The weather is also better than Beijing. But if you are really interested in China's culture, then Beijing is a good choice.

All of my friends who went to Shanghai really liked it while I didn't. It isn't a Chinese city but a western one. So unless you are interested in a fast developping city then Shanghai is the place to be. Everything moves so fast.

But as it was said if you prefer a historical cith then Baijing is the choice to make.
