Breda 88, Italian attacker-heavy fighter, when the prototype took off, it performed very good speed, agility....but when they armed(machine guns, ammunitions, and some bombs) it was hardly able to take off...
Baulton Paul Defiant, British fighter, was probably the most useless fighter of the WW2 because of the armament in turret. After few succesful missions because german pilot confused it for spitfires or hurricane and attacked it from behind, but then they started attacking it from the bottom. This fighters were soon retired from the first line.
these are the only that came into my mind at the moment...

As you say, very subjective. You also specify "in service" which eliminates the many, many prototypes that turned out to be useless. I would also mention the aircraft that have been misused and gained bad reputations because of that misuse. I always preach that ALL aircraft are mission specific, because it is very true. One of the best examples is the Republic F-105 being turned into a fighter/bomber in Vietnam. The Thud was a tremendous aircraft that was badly used. Some charlie could fire his AK-47 at a low-flying Thud, hit it in the belly and the plane would be lost because of hydraulic failure. She was never meant for ground support or those hydraulic lines wouldn't have been unprotected. So to be perfectly fair, I have to say there are no real "worst" aircraft. Production aircraft that perform the mission they were designed for have all been pretty darned good.

The Cutlass was a good aircraft. Just a little bit ahead of it time.
The worst idea was the XF-85 Goblin. Sounded good and it looked funny, but it was a joke.
Another one is that V-22 Osprey. The military has finally taken delivery of them, but as of to date, none have flown into harms way. Why, cause the thing will get shot down. Sounded good, but was and still is a bad idea.

From the "60's, the Convair 880.
slightly smaller than a 707, it was fast, but a gas guzzler and not profitable to operate.

I always say that in the civilian realm it's the DC-3 and in terms pf military it's the B1B. It's strictly because of how they look. I love them both.
