Well it really depends on what you are auditioning for...
You really can't audition for a show like Jekyll and Hyde or Les Mis and sing something like "My Favorite Things" from sound of Music. It just doesn't work like that, lol.
I suggest you study the show and the role you would like, sometimes it helps to sing a song that the character sings, but often directors don't like that.

I don't suggest doing stuff like Wicked, Rent and Phantom of the Opera...they are WAY over done and the directors have probably heard it so much.

If it is a happy and lighthearted musical I suggest doing:

All for You ---Seussical the Musical

Much More ---The Fantasticks

Gimme Gimme----Thoroughly Modern Millie

Suddenly Seymore---Little Shop of Horrors

--or---

Young and Healthy----42nd Street

However if it is a drama I suggest:

A New Life---Jekyll and Hyde

In His Eyes---Jekyll and Hyde

Home----Beauty and the Beast

---or---

On My Own---Les Mis

Do something you are comfortable with and study the show!

I'm assuming your auditioning for a musical production? You should choose a song that shows off your vocal range, but more importantly, you need to show the auditors that you are right for a particular part in their show. So,after you've determined which character you'd like to audition for, choose that same type of character from another show. Sondheim has written some great songs with a wide variety of characters that are very actable. That's a great place to start your research.

I agree with jazz king, but if you would like specific examples I can give you one good one. "Still Hurting" from the last five years has some amazing acting oppurtunity. Also it is the only Jason Robert Brown i can think of that will not kill your pianist. Also steer clear from musicals like Aida, Wicked, Rent, and anything Rodgers and Hammerstein. Auditors are looking for more realism, and the song i suggested has a ton of acting oppurtunity. Also another good one is "Christmas Lullaby" from Songs for A New World.
