Is there any free software around that will let me convert word documents to pdf format?

Do a search for Adobe distiller. You probably alread have it. You make a PDF as thought it is a printer. Newer versions of MS Word and Adobe tries to hide this obscure (printer way) of doing things and simply puts a button in the top right of MS Word.

It's built into Word 2000 as simply saving and selecting that file format's extension, .pdf.
