it just started this morning and was only bothersome then, but is now getting quite painful, even to swallow, as I push my tongue to the roof of my mouth to swallow

I don't think it is syphilis, considering I am a married woman in a monogamous relationship with my husband, and while I realize it is always possible for a partner to not be faithful, from what I have read, syhphilis wouldn't be painful, and this is pretty painful. If it continues, I will indeed see my dentist, but, was just curious if any one had any ideas

I'm a dentist.

Very difficult to tell without seeing it.

It could be some sort of ulcer developing. From what? Who knows. Injury perhaps? Could be a syphilitic chancre!

See your doctor (dentist or physician) about it.
