I had to play the villian in my relationship to break it up. It was time, but now how do i explain that and really tell him i am sorry and i still love him, we just cant be together?

If he still wants you and is in love with you - you need to stay the villian longer or he will think that cos you love him you will sort it out eventually and he will wait!!
Wait until he has moved on or you have before you explain this to him.

if you "can't be together" then you don't love him. c'mon. why play with a guy's head? you should be lucky someone really wants you or loved you. someday you won't have that. I hope you get it handed to you someday for being this "villian" (sic) you describe. he deserves better.

Just tell him exactly what you just said. I'm sure he'll appreciate knowing how you feel despite of breakup.

just be honest with him, tell him everything your feeling and that you wish it would work but it wont. talk to him about possibly staying friends
