Heero ~
I found that moving around the ring and shadow boxing is the best way to work your footwork. The more you're in the ring the more comfortable you'll be in the ring. You can work your side to side movement and you practice cutting off the ring on your opponent. Have a trainer watch you the first couple of times, he/she can let you know what you're doing wrong or what you need to improve on. The hands and feet go together, you can't work on your footwork with keeping your hands up or punching properly.

Try doing five 3 minute rounds at first with 1 minute rest between rounds, then after you've built yourself up, take out the minute rest. The more time you spend moving the better your cardios going to be.

I hope this helps Heero, good luck and thanks for the question.

In case you didn't get the answer you were looking for: FOOTWORK is a top 3 component in tennis. 1. You have to get to the ball. 2. Then, you make small adjustments to put your body in perfect position to be able make contact with the ball in the most ideal position possible. How else are you going to hit a winner? Think about this: How can I get to the ball most efficiently & quickly while keeping my eye on the ball? When I've gotten to the ball, how can I make small adjustments to get myself in the best position possible? Footwork drills are important to becoming a better player. The best drills help you to move with the idea that the head should not move up and down unnecessarily. Keeping you head --and therefore you eyes -- along the same level plane will aid you in judging the ball's height/bounce/trajectory. Some players get to the ball but cannot judge the ball's bounce accurately/consistently enough to hit it the way they want to. Watch Roger Federer -- he keeps his head as level as possible even when moving quickly. That leads me to my favorite saying on court: "Footwork is useless you're SEEING the ball."

I'd like to add to Santana's answer. Number one he is spot on. Number two once you've done what Santana recommended you can also shadowbox in front or a full length mirror, which any boxing gym worth it's salt has, and you can check your footwork out that way. It would reinforce what you're working on.
