I try to imagine nothingness. As soon as I get there I go "ahhhhhhhh!" and shake it off because it's too scarey.- the concept of nothing not being nothing because nothing is something...

You are experimenting with something very dangerous. When you meditate on nothing you may open up yourself to possession by spirits that are decidedly not angelic. If you are not a Christian, that is having the presence of the Holy
Ghost residing(by invitation only) within you other spirits may enter in. When you get scared that is for a good reason, you should not be meditating on nothing. The bible says to meditate on the goodness of God and his love. If you need something to meditate on, read King James and think about all God has done for you. If you dont know ask a few christian friends to help you, I am sure they would love to introduce you to their best friend, Jesus Christ. Love in Christ

Why think of nothingness?
I was taught to meditate by concentration on the rising and falling of my abdomen while breathing. As other ideas and concepts enter my mind I was taught to recognize that they had arisen and discard them as irrelevant. If you are thinking about nothingness you are still thinking rather than becoming in tune with the nature of your mind.
Another technique is to visualize you consciousness as a ball of light which you can move to concentrate anywhere you choose. Practice this visualization and move the ball of light to the center of your chest. Hold the ball in this position and allow nothing else to enter that ball except the light itself.
Try these exercises for a few minutes each day and slowly increase the duration.
Remember that meditation is only a technique to learn control of your mind and body and not an end in itself.

How do you turn off the internal dialog, eh? A line from you know where springs to mind. "Be still, and know that I am God." I'm not a particuarly religious type so don't worry about what 's meant by "God." If you're like a lot of Americans you are geared to do something instead of nothing. Try doing some strenuous execise before you meditate( Yoga, if you wish; weightlifting if you must.)Pick a vowel sound and repeat it as a chant. Om,om,om, for instance. That should be what you hear instead of your own thoughts .Focus on how the rythym of your breath against the philtrum (that's the piece of skin between your nose and lip) feels. Cool on in. warm on out, etc. That's the basics.

you are probably over thinking it. It takes an incredibly long time to get to nothingness in meditation. And most never do. It is okay to have thoughts, just try to get back on track (ie. focus) dont get stressed out over it. Even if you dont achieve nothingness, it will still bring you peace. There isnt a wrong way to meditate, it just makes it very difficult if you over think it. I hope this helps.

You don't hav to imagine nothing to meditate.best to just clear your mind and breath through your nose. Focus on your body and the rise and fall of breath. Your not imagining anything because your focusing on something outside of your mind. If u can't do this just imagin peaceful things.

Use a focus other than nothingness. Concentrate on a candle, or your breathing, or some other whatever.

Or simply note the fear you feel when you contemplate nothingness without judging it or yourself.

Focus on something that you enjoy or on something that you would enjoy if it came about. When other thoughts intrude, just chuckle and return to your original choice. As long as you can go uninterupted for a minute or so you will be doing fine.

Just relax, and find a nice, quiet place where you wont be disturbed by any one/thing.

Clear all the thoughts from your mind, and breathe deeply. Don't concentrate on anything, except your method of meditation. Its all about relaxation really...

in buddhist religion we do formless meditation after we posses any one of gazing meditation.

and this is the website which tell you how to do a gazing meditation.

finish this one first then back to to your "emptiness".

the nothing ness begins with stilling the fear
not judging it is the end goal not the end destiny,
just sit in peace looking not naming not caring not judging just seeing hearing smelling feeling yet not trying to indentify or decide what they are let it all melt into just being
