I am not Atheist, but I think even those who call themselves Christians (but not all) come off sarcastic and spiteful.
It boils down to personality type more than whether one is atheist or whatever.
Human nature will (on the average) try to snap back at someone they feel threatened by. Its easier for one to deny they feel threatened.., but from a psychological standpoint, its the only thing that accounts for the sarcasm and in many cases, low level mentality of "Oh yeah!? Well.., blah blah blah! So there!".
Many people from both sides of the proverbial fence behave this way. We want to justify either our beliefs in the Eternal or non beliefs in an Eternal.
So.., whatcha gunna do? Call Ghost Busters or realize what the dealio is - and how foolish we look when we start in with these things? Alas - someone will say something that sets me on the offensive and I will react.
We really should see how childish we act, and initiate a true grown up stance, refusing to give into childish banter.
**sticks tongue out at you and runs away**

I have noticed that as well. Perhaps it is due to the fact that many atheists believe that they are exempted from commonities, such as the Ten Commandments, and other ideas that regulate human behavior. In other words, because they believe that no one judges their behavior, they don't need to monitor it.
So, being rude is a freedom they have, and they choose to excercise it through sarcasm. I am an atheist, as well, however I choose to believe that religion is the human desire to believe that what they are doing and how they live has some greater purpose, which is egotistical and ridiculous. But, in respect to your question, I believe that as a human being each person has the obligation to be courteous and kind to every other human being, regardless of personal beliefs.

Well, I know a lot of sarcastic atheists.... my dad for one and one of my best friends :) but what I think is that that is their way of showing people what they believe in a way. Christians use the bible as their way of proving a point, but atheists have no bible to refer to, so they have to show others what the others are really saying. I know that I say things that come out wrong and come out mean and I try to prove stupid points, so it is better for people to be sarcastic sometimes... if any of that makes sense :)

I don't believe there is any linkage between Atheists and sarcasm at all. Now Banana Snakes are a different think we are all smart butts.

Sarcasm may not be only be linked to aethiests, it may just be a common attitude among them. Christanity promotoes sincerity and generosity of the heart, so maybe its lack of influence and a substantial belief to such morals.

I suffer with bouts of sarcasm and I assure you, I am not an atheist. I am careful how I express it, because of it's sinful potential.

Believers like to believe in faith so it may bother you as close minded. Regardless whether you are the majority or not, you probably choose to be sarcastic in order to highlight your intelligence (that you can doubt religion).
Just my 2 cents, hope I made any sense.

I honestly believe you think you are correct and superior in intelligence. It frustrates you that the "weak" little christians aren't persuaded by your opinions. You are frustrated by your own confusion with your contradictions. Many atheists think we are brainwashed and weak to follow God. If we were that weak and easy to brainwash shouldn't we fall into being brainwashed by atheism? We aren't and that bothers the atheist. You have been closed off to our beliefs and can't see where we are coming from. Thats my opinion.

I think most minority groups try to find humor with what particular things they have to deal with...this minority is just particularly sarcastic.. Maybe we are just good at it or it somehow became the common form of humor for us.
