The good news is that you can easily improve your current time. However, a 5 minute mile is a very impressive achievement, even for people who are in a top physical condition. Out of a group of 100 young males (18-22) in decent physical condition, most would break the 8 minute barrier but very few (1 or 2) could do the mile in less than 5 minutes.

It's good that you have set such a high goal, but be prepared and do not be disappointed if you don't manage. The effort will be worth it and any result below 7 minutes is good.

I will not offer a specific training program, but do ask a fitness instructor or join a running team. You will need advice and encouragement to make this happen.

Good luck!

Sorry to say it but you can't run a 5 min mile in one year if you are running a 9:15. I mean you are trying to cut almost 4 min off you time. If by some miracle you can accomplish this you are heading towards a injury because you are pushing your body to hard for that time span. If you are looking to cut your time though you should first work on getting a better "base". You need to work up to the point where you can run 3-5 miles easily without stopping. That is a good start for a good "base". After this you should start to incorporate one or two "speed" workouts a week. A example of a speed workout is you run 12x400m, and you alternate going fast and then going slow but never stop and rest. It is also important to make sure that you run about the same times for each of the laps. Here is an example of what I mean. A lap of lets say 70 sec. followed by a lap of 90 sec. then 70 sec. and so on all the way to 12 laps. Make sure that you have a good worm up. About half a mile slow jog, and a half mile cool down run. I think that a realistic goal for you should be a sub 7 min mile. I mean that is taking 2 min off and from where you are now would be a great accomplishment. From there you can go to a five min. mile. If you need more info email me and I can help you with a more specific workout based on you times.

It can be done. Except I ran my first 6 and 5 minute miles last year. I started 7th grade last year with a 7:23 and ended with a 5:41. But getting to that point of speed wasn't easy at all. I did alot of runs through mountain trails and on the track I did speed drills like the 800m and 400m. I followed the wrestlers training regiment from school and I got really lean and packed on some muscle but I still cut back on the strength workouts a bit. To much muscle slows you down alot to much fat is pretty bad to. So just get lean enough and go on fast 2 mile runs 3 times a week. Do this on a basis and you should be able to inch it in. Although it could be harder because you are starting almost 2 minutes slower than the time I started with. But It could be done. Don't worry about it though you will get thier one day.

You should be young, thin, and not prone to injury.

A 9:15 mile isn't very fast (unless you are really young or really old).

And a 5 minute mile is 1:15 per quarter mile.

So go to a track, see if you can right now do a quarter mile in 1:15 without throwing up at the end.

If so, start training every day, one day for speed, the next day for distance. The speed work can be running a 220, walking a quarter mile, running a 220, walking a quarter mile, etc. for a one hour workout.

The endurance work can be jogging for an hour, see if you can get in 7 miles in a one hour workout.

Get a really good pair of running shoes, running socks, and at the slightest hint of injury, like a muscle twinge, call it a day and rest.

After that, Que Sara, sara ... whatever will be, will be.

It's entirely doable! It's really an interesting coincidence but my mile time was also around 9:15 during the spring of my 8th grade year, but I suppose that wasn't the very best I could've done. I joined the cross country team and the following spring did track with my high school team and I ran a mile in 5:07. You can do it! No fears!

The only way to run a 5 minute mile in one year, while u currently run 9:15 is to go to sleep and dream about it. You can cut down your time but not like cut it down by 4;45 minutes. You could get a trainer.

if 9 minutes is hard for you then you probably dont want to try to get a 5 minute mile, its just not for you. if you are just lazy and dont particularly enjoy running then you should know that it will be extremely hard to make such an improvement and take alot longer than you want. you will need to run hard workouts everyday, 5-6 days a week. a mix of longer runs perferably with hills, and shorter anerobic workouts on a track. your biggest problem will be motivation.

you could get that time if you:

1. run 2 hours every morning
2. work out 1 hour
3. stretch and cool down for 30 min
4. eat your vegies and stay away from soda and McDonalds

do this everyday and push yourself harder on Saturdays

all right, you can take Sundays off... happy now? :)

for a 30 minute run you would break it down as follows
Jog 4 mins: run as fast as you can for 1
when that gets easy
Jog 3 Mins: run as fast as you can for 2
when that gets easy
Jog 2 MIns: run as fast as you can for 1
when that gets easy
jog for 1 min: run as fast as you can for 1
