Neither is a religion. They're here because they're interested in the topic. Do you have to be a veterinarian (or perhaps a plant or animal?) to ask or answer questions in the "Pet" section?

Atheism is relevant to "Religion & Spirituality" because it relates to religion and spirituality in a significant way (in that it is often characterized as the rejection of religious ideologies), not because it is a religion or ideology. Plus, atheism is often only meaningful to discuss in the context of debates about theism or God, which is more clearly religious in nature.

Some would argue that Buddhism isn't a religion--rather, that it's a philosophy. However, it's relevant enough to religion and spirituality in general that we're willing to fudge the details and open up discussion for Buddhism-related topics here. Same with Satanism, etc. I see no practical reason not to do the same for atheism; all that really matters is that people get their questions answered. The categorization system is merely a means to that end, and isn't really important in its own right.

No, they are not both religions.

Note, you seem to be aware, at least peripherally, of the fact that this is the "Religion and Spirtuality" Section, now if you could grasp the notion that Christianity is not the only spiritual belief, you might be on your way to an epiphany about why people besides Christians enter the discussion.

Agnoticism would probably be considered a "religion"; although I'm not so sure about Atheism since afterall, atheists do not believe in any god/God.

Religion is a very broad term used to describe a set of beliefs. It includes everything from Christianity to buddhism to islamic to satanism...(ETC.)

May ppl often associate "religion" with one of these specific religious sects; but in actual fact it's just an umbrella term.

It depends on how you define religion. They are not organized religions. They are matters of a world view. They are an option when you're admitted to the hospital. They are an option on military dog tags. At least you haven't fallen into the trap, that so many who ask this tired question have, of confusing R&S with a private church club.

Nope. Atheism is the rejection of religion. That means it is ABOUT religion. So this is the place to talk about it. And this question gets asked like 50 times a day. Are you guys really that insecure that you can't take criticism?

well i think religion is a means of control, like marx. "religion is the opiate of the masses" atheism is just a label given to smart people who like most of us think that mankind is the measure of all things on this planet. agnostics on the other hand are scared confused people who like religious people are scared if they say it's no god they will be struck down or something worse like death which is everybodys fate.

Being atheist or agnostic does not automatically make you uninterested in spiritual things - especially agnostics.

Just out of curiosity, if you feel they're "welcome here to participate", why post this? The only reason seems to be to irritate atheists and agnostics.

You don't have to believe in god to find religious discussions interesting. I like learning about pirates, doesn't mean I am one, right?

Also? This is the 30 millionth time this question has been asked.
