The Army and the Police are two very different forces. The only thing in common is that both are armed. They have different structures, different chains of command, different equipment levels and most importantly... different functions & mandates!
The police force is tasked with maintaining law and order among civilian populations of a state. They are custodians and guardians of the law. They are therefore armed accordingly. Most police forces are provided with only small arms (pistols, revolvers, sniper rifles, etc.. etc..) and riot control equipment like rubber ammo, water canons and tear-gas.
The army however has really heavy firepower at its disposal. Army inventories include small arms, artillery, armor, mines, rockets and almost any weapon you can think of. This is because the army is tasked with fighting wars to either defend own land, or to invade a foreign land.
In terms of firepower and combat capability... the army would win hands down. It's not even a contest.
In civilian areas and in peace time however, the police may exercise more authority over the general public.

Depends, if there is no crisis on the streets, the army has no power to run out with guns and kill people. Only the police can patrol and monitor the streets. Buy, if there is a crisis, such as invasion from another country attempting to attack any part of the U.S, than the Army has the upperhand in power. Plus the army has the M-16's which are kick-butt.

as an infantry soldier in the army, in my honest , no bs opinion.....i would honestly say the police. the army is a big machine which is not set up for todays warfare , thus the police can adapt better and most likely win......keep in mind although the army is over 500,000 thousand soldiers only about 150,000 of those are actually real combat soldiers. there are well over 2 million police officers in the united states.

In day to day situations the police (because they can charge a military member but a military member cannot charge a police member) but there is the option of in disasterous situations calling martial law which means the military has all conrtolling power. Because of this option - the army.

why would you even compare the two? the army is a large organization the is not bigger than the US, where as the police has so many more oranizations in the US. I would consider everyone the is of service to country works for the same reason.

Really, it depends on where you are and what you mean by "powerful". Within the U.S., I'd have to say the police have more "power" because the military are forbidden to take part in law enforcement of military property. However, if "power" is defined by number and potential destructive power of weapons, the military has the police beat hands down.
