To run barrels you need to learn how to rate your horse for the barrel. You need to find or train a horse that has been taught to bend or "give". You must know where to align his approach to the barrel so he can wrap around your leg and barrel as he digs in to the next one. Most of these are taught not by running barrels over and over but with bending exercises, poles, cones loping circles etc.

If you need a horse with a bad back to run barrels, you don't need to be in the competition.

well....try some training. Tie your horse's reins on the saddle horn tight and make him/her turn around with ease. do it for 5 minutes. Let that rein loose and do the other rein and make him flex. Use your leg aids (BIG PART) and make him flex and pull on the reins to make bend with ease. He would realize how to flex and bend properly. GOOD LUCK WITH IT!!
