Found an old shotgun not sure if it is a 12 or 16 gauge. Single barrell breach, had Volunteer Gun Company on the side. Looking for help on finding a site that I can find pictures to compare to so I can see how old it is, and where it came from. Found in New Orleans, LA. Any infomation at this point will be helpful. Thanks.

The gauge should be listed somewhere on the side of the barrel.

According to some on-line sources: Volunteer Arms Co. was Belknap Hardware & Manufacturing, of Louisville, KY. It operated under that name from 1907 until 1986. The Volunteer single-barrel shotguns were Iver Johnsons manufactured from 1909 until about the mid 1970's. Try entering Belknap Hardware & Manufacturing on a search engine and see what comes up.

To find out what gauge your shotgun is try 20, 16 and 12 gauge shells. Use low base and don't try to shoot it without at least a through cleaning and if feasible, have it checked out by a competent gunsmith or other knowledgeable person.

Good luck.
