Pryex is a brand name for a borosilicate based glass. Borosilicate glass can resist temperatures around 450 degrees F depending on the thickness. Many companies use this borosilicate type glass.

Pyrex is used in many labs because of the resistance to both heat and different chemicals. It is also used in a variety of pressure applications because it holds up to high pressure, especially if it is tempered (strenghten the glass through the use of heat and air). By tempering the glass it also increases the thermal shock (taking from extreme heat to cold will cause non-tempered glass to shatter/break) of the glass.

Pryex is known to the general public as bake-ware made by Corning. Many of the clear glass dishes you can use in the oven are Pyrex dishes. Pyrex dishes are not tempered, thus they will break if you pour cold water on a hot Pyrex.
