Everyone is different. I was surprised the first person said to NOT learn about them. For me, the best thing for me to do was to do exactly that. It helped me know myself better and know why I was feeling or doing what I was doing. Not only that but realizing someone else is or has experienced the SAME things really helps alot.

Being diagnosed with anything sucks. If the dr. tells you that you have a cold... that sucks, sprained your ankle, that sucks. Depressive disorders suck too but just like chicken soup, rest, and pain killers, there are things you can do and medicines you can take that will make you feel better.

Counseling and meds work best together. I know people who've done one or the other, but something always seems to be missing. If you can, get both and see if your doctors can keep each other updated (i.e. what symptoms your having, what scripts are recommended).

Personally, I'd be more freaked out feeling the way you're feeling without knowing whats wrong or what can be done.

Yes, you may be right. The outcome either way is a hassle. You don't mention your age - - - - but if you are a teen, hormones still play a factor in your moods. The psychiatrist will just ask a lot of questions about your UP times, your DOWN times and your moods over the past months or even years. You may hear a lot of ..... "on a scale from 1 to10 . . . blah, blah blah..." Your doctor is referring you because he or she doesn't feel 100% qualified to treat your mental condition. You can have an initial consultation with the psychiatrist to the tune of $200 + and they will give you what they suspect is a starting point in diagnosing you. (True diagnosis could take years) Then you may go home and sort of digest the information he/she shared and decide if it is right on target or if you want to do some of your own research. Ultimately YOU have to be the one to decide what to do to help yourself. The psychiatrist will most surely want to put you on medication. Most do not believe in any type of herbal or cognitive therapy. Too bad, because I think doctors are way over prescribing meds these days.

I do wish you the best. I went through a year of hell with my teenage daughter. She's 17 now, but after doctors, psychologist, psychiatrist , medication. . .etc,. . . . I have done my own research on alternative therapy and she's doing better now than she's ever been. Just hang in there and don't be afraid to take control of your own health a bit. Start by taking good care of your body and mind.

Most psychiatrists will have you take a series of questionaires to help them narrow things down. Some might order blood work. At any rate, it's much better to get treated than to live everyday with the symptoms of any of these. You'll be less freaked out and more in control of things once you get the right treatment. You're really going to feel so much better when someone can help you. I've been there and am still there. Best to you.

First stop freaking...... It does suck okay.... But with meds and counseling you be fine

I have all three. I take medications for all three, See I can write in sentences. I can raise a son. I can drive a car,
They do these written test and then they talk to you and talk some more watching your bodies reaction and movements. Are you tapping you feet, moving your hands, etc.

Stop thinking about it get through each day the best you can and you be fine. Don't take on more than you can handle it will be there tomorrow and if doesn't get done who cares. If your loved ones love you they will pitch in to help. You need to worry about you. (okay I don't do it but its told to me every day) you can email me.

Whatever label they put on you you will be treated for being some kind of crazy. To connect with a community who accept you no matter what your diagnosis and treat you with respect whether you are or are not diagnosed, are on medication or not, or using alternative approaches, and who encourage you to focus on your strengths you may want to check out The Icarus Project. http://www.theicarusproject.net

hi I don't really know what to say, but i'm in the same situaton at the moment. Don't know if its just depression that i've left untreated for 10 years, or if i'm going crazy. I really hope you get the right help.

I think the less you research about the diagnoses the better. That way you are not in any way swaying the results in one way or another. They will not hurt you, just talk to you. Just be honest and hopefully you will be feeling a whole lot better soon.

it hard to say those are 3 different disorders. You have to into great detail regarding the symptoms you are having. All can be treated with medication.
