Let me give you some pointers ...

If you want to try a super fruity drink, or something blended with special instructions, go to a chain restaurant with a bar. They will have more time and the avaliable goods to make just about anything.

If you are going to more of a neighborhood bar, stay away from really fruity drinks and try to go with 1 mixer drinks, like Rum and Coke, Vodka and Cranberry, and Malibu and Pineapple. If your have any doubts, ask the bartender to make you something and they should oblige if not too busy.

If your ever out at a really busy bar or night club, always order 1 mixer drinkers like those above or beer. No exceptions. You don't want to be pegged a pain in the *** and never get another drink.

That said, I recommend Margaritas at a restaurant, Long Islands at most bars if it's not too busy, Vodka and Cranberry, Malibu and Pineapple, Amaertto Sours, Midori Sours and Miller Lite. Any of those should do you fine for your first drink.

Well, for me there is only one answer at a bar: BEER.

But, if you're going for cocktails, the Red Bull and Vodka Martini seems to be a huge hit. Also, Irish Car Bombs, Jaegar Bombs and several other gross concoctions with the word "bomb" in the moniker. The old standby's are still around, Cosmos, etc, but do yourself a favor and stay away from those ridiculous drinks that end in "-tini". Appletini, Margatini, Bilinitini. You'll be sorely disappointed since they all taste like ***-a-tini

I live in the midwest. We like our martinis 'round here. Gin martini is sweeter (Tanquarey martini), but vodka martini (Absolute martini) has a kick. If it's your 21st (or 19?) B-day, tell the bartender and maybe you'll get a free birthday shot/drink.

At a bar, good ol' martini is the best. In a fancy restaurant, cutesy, sugary drinks with pretty color like a daquiris, margaritas or bellinis are safe (boring, if I may say) choices. I recommend getting top shelf selection for your first drink because some cheapy well drinks can make you sick and totally ruin the whole experince :)

Bottoms up, happy drinking!!!!!

Depends on where you are. I bartend in Toronto, Ontario. The most boring place to bartend in the word. the most common drink asked for here is a Cape Cod. Cranberry and Vodka. I can make you a drink that is on fire but people ask for an ounce of Vodka in Cranberry juice. What ever.

my first drink (officially at a bar on my 21st b-day) was a Sex on the beach. its real fruity. i like to get a little more liquor for my dollar (so i get long islands) but that was a great first drink. i will always remember it its this pretty color and depending on where u are they dress it up real cute (cherry, umbrella). the most common i think is a vodka with cran. and if ur at a posh place amaretto sours.

If you like whiskey, but like fruity as well :: you might like a Miami Sunsets. Those are made with Jim Beam orange juice and a dash of cranberry juice.

The actual recipe is ::

2 parts Jim Beam
1 part Triple Sec
3 parts orange juice
1/2 part cranberry.

You will have to adjust to taste, but they are really good.

Long Island Tea packs a punch, but for all the alcohol, you can actually enjoy the taste! Margaritas are good if you like lime. Lots of people like gin & tonic but i think it tastes like pureed pine trees. Beer. Wine. Shots. I bet you'd like a Cosmopolitan.
