Cab drivers don't like it when you sit in the front.
You can't mug them, or bother them.
Best to sit in the back.
Also always know where you are going, so they don't charge you more money. And tip like you are out to eat.

It is totally allowed to sit in the front, and when you have four people in a cab, one person must sit in the front due to seat belt laws.
Ask the driver nicely and tell him why you want to sit there. Tip him well at the end and it should be fine.
You might even end up with a driver who will have a nice conversation - or, even more rare these days - a driver who knows where he is going and can point some things out for you.
That being said, you can still get a pretty good view from the back seat.

It's much nicer to sit in back. The only times I've ridden up front (a couple in 15 years!) was b/c we had 4 passengers. It's narly up there. Or it can be -- newspapers, food, BO. Yuk! Plus the driver would probably reject the idea if it's just you as the passenger.

It is against the law to prohibit you from sitting up there. Bad cabbies might get annoyed, but the good ones know that "the customer is always right." Just give him.her a good tip.

They usually don't like it. You have to fight a little for it. If you say that want to sit in front so that you can see better, they will probably not be like it.

Yellow cabs really don't like people sitting in the front. You may be able to convince a livery cab to let you sit in the front. But good luck finding a livery cab in downtown NYC.
