If your event is in a alrge place, you are going to need effective ways to decorate the space in a classy manner! Since you aren't into balloons, GREAT, I won't have to say that they are tacky! Go you! Anyway, stay away from kids birthdya party decorations, paper stuff, balloons, etc-you get the point!
Think tulle, white lights, flowers and greenery! Get lots of trees/bushes in pots! These can be rented from local nurseries and florists! They are great fillers and put some white lights in them-instant atmosphere! I would suggesst silver or pewter for your vases and accents, it will give a nice reflective surface and won't be transulcent like glass, you want to have reflection to add to the atosphere! You can have a tall silver vase or even a candleabra with cascading flowers and candles! For your table linens, I would say have a white base linen to the floor, and have a topper for each table. Alternate your tables with lavender and blue toppers. You can then have a simple wooden white chair, or have covers on them, if you choose to have covers, I would go with the same color as the topper with a tie back in the opposite color.
For flower choices, I would go with hydrangeas, you can get them in the purple and the blue. Add in some dark purple berries for a nice contrast. If you want lots of variety in flowers, also use some blue delphenium (gorgeous) and some lavender asters. Blue star and grape hyacinths are also beautiful!
For added lighting you could also have paper lanterns in your blue and lavender colors hanging from the ceiling in certain areas. Or have several of them hanging over each table, and then have a low arrangement.

You don't need balloons. Flowers and bows would be very nice. If you are talking about the reception, have chair covers in lavendar and tie backs in medium blue and do the table in the two colors. Let your center pieces be a vase with flowers and stems in your colors or go simple and use glass bowls with lavendar colored water and floating medium blue candles or use colored glass marbles. You can get dozens of ideas just looking in a brides' magazine. Plunk down $6 and get one. You will be amazed at the ideas that will come to you then.

Bouquets of violets, irises or blue bonnets would look nice around the altar and reception hall as well as making beautiful centerpieces in a white basket with blue ribbon. Lavender ribbons as sashes with large bows over white table cloths at the reception would also look nice.

we cut small saplings out of the grove here... and potted them in ice cream pails with cement. then we took Toule and wrapped the ice cream pail to cover it... and draped it around the trees... and also put on white lights. we had about 20 of these around the reception area and it was really cool, especially when the lights were down for the dance.

i didn't have any balloons or streamers or any of that tacky stuff. I had flowers, lots and lots of flowers. I bought my flowers wholesale and put vases on all the tabeles, petals down the centers of all the tables, flowers all over the church. It was simple and elegant.
