When my bro was in the Corps they did stuff like that, not intended to injure... more of a "straighten up and fly right" thing.. they also had a stupid ritual for the first time you went over the equator.

I'm a military brat, a Corps brat.. all this stuff is (was) meant to reinforce the idea that you are a team. If one of you is not pulling your weight, then the others needs to help.. It's not done, or condoned anymore. And through 4 generations in my family I've never heard of injury being caused, other than feelings.

Back in the day stuff like that could happen to just the right person. There is always a punk in boot camp that needs this sort of thing, but the kinder more gentle way in which we train our military no longer stands by for stuff like what you saw in the movie.

Not anymore, and many will not agree with me for sake of keeping this sort of stuff silent, but in boot camp (mainly Marines) if a member of the platoon keeps falling out of runs or causes problems for other Marines, then some "attitude adjustment", or "incentive" is administered, for the simple reason that everyone in the platoon pays for the mistake or mistakes of each member. They do not practice it anymore, but yes, as a Marine, and knowing the facts , it was practiced. Is it right, no, but for the rest of the troops and for the one or ones failing, this method worked. Yea, in many movies its shown (Full Metal Jacket), and or called "code red", it did happen, but dicipline was learned.

Are you talking about the scene in Full Metal Jacket?

im sure that it has been done before, not by the drill sgts of course but by the person's peers. the reason is because they really focus on team effort in basic training, so if one person screws up, everybody suffers the consequences. when you have this one person who constantly gets everyone in trouble it gets really old really quick. this didnt happen in my basic training company, but i would not doubt that it has happened somewhere. however, if the people doing it are caught, it is considered hazing and all of them would get in big trouble. the thing is, usually the person it happened to is too afraid to tell.

they maybe have before in isolated incidents but that doesn't happen now. it's called a blanket party and it's pretty much an urban legend in the military. ask anyone who was in boot camp for any of the branches and i'm sure they'll swear that while they were in boot camp, it happened but not in their unit, platoon, flight etc. just like the dear john porn tape from gulf war.
