my cousins are muslim. I heard they don't celebrate birthdays, accept presents from christians including their family members who are christian, and aren't allowed to date. They also wear modest clothing, they always wear a veil and long baggy clothes even in the summer. They can't even shave. It's like they live through a long list of rules or something. But I have some friends who are muslim and they do celebrate birthdays and date and aren't as restricted about issues like that. Do muslims have a choice on whether they can live as freely as americans or non-muslims?

Muslims were told not to celebrate holidays of other religions. Some muslims include cultural holidays also. I dont believe there is anything wrong with celebrating your birthday as long as you dont do anything that is not allowed in islam.
We are not allowed to have boyfriends or girlfriends or engage in any kind of sexual acts out of marriage. However if a boy or girl is engaged he or she is allowed to talk to his/her fiance and get to know them as long as they do not do anything else.
All muslims, both men and women must wear modest clothes. They do not have to be extremely baggy but they should not be very revealing.
Do you mean shaving as in shaving their beards? This was a sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) but it is not that important anymore. There were reasons he made the rule back then that do not apply today. It is good for men to have beards, but not obligatory. As for the rest of shaving of body, it is not just allowed, but required.
The reason you hear different views is because there are different levels of strictness. Some people are too leniant and others are too strict. We get these rules from the Quran and haidth (sayings of the Prophet (pbuh)).

Basically every religion has an Orthodox and a reform community. This is the same in Islam. Very religious people wear beards. This is kind of controversial. Some say beards are necessary, while some say that without it is also ok. In my family we dont have beards but we still practise Islam. Similarly how the women dress is also controversial. Some say that you should wear a long loose dress. However, some say if you cover yourself modestly it is ok. In my family most people do not wear the long loose dresses. It varies. THe idea in Islam is to try your best. I guess people who are strict feel comfortable with it. However some Muslims might date. Dating is however forbidden. If they do it that is wrong. There are religious and moderate people everywhere.

Yes Muslims have a choice. I choose not to wear the veil yet because I dont feel I have reached that point for myself. I feel that when I am married with children I probably will choose to wear it because I think I would want to be more modest. And we are aloud to "date" and get to know people. But not aloud to have sex or anything disrespectful to ourselves or our family.

But for now. I wear Short sleeves and I dont wear Mini skirts or shorts or tank tops. Because That is my decision and my family and everyone I love respects that.

Of course. Everyone has a choice. Even Us Muslims even though some people make you believe other wise.

Thank You. I hope I enlightened you a bit on the subject of our values.

:)

Yes. Your cousins are pious Muslims who adhere to the Islamic rules. They are doing the right things. In Islam, celebrating our birthday with party and dancing is forbidden. However, if we still need to celebrate, we could celebrate with reciting prayer. However, in todays world, many had adapt to the western life style and disregard the Islamic values. It is up to the individual Muslims to make their own choice. After all they are the one who will answer for their own grave.

about celebrating birthdays i not sure,i didn't celebrate it really.

i not sure about islam on dating, but dating is one of causes that contribute sex before marriage.so dating in bad way, such as dating in isolated area is strictly prohibited.some people said dating and bring small kids (young brother or sister) together is okay.

about shaving (having beard),i think it not compulsary really.it just recommended by muhammad saw.muhammad saw recommend muslim to shave mustache and and leave beard alone OR having all facial hair (no shaving at all).i never have date before.

muslims girls and women MUST cover all their body part except face and hand with suitable cloth .don't wear tight clothor transparent cloth.

IN this respect they are like any other religious cult: they must be different to be special. Note how Christians generally don't stick out--they know the outward doesn't matter, especially to God. But the older the religious cult, the more rules they will have as they more and more try to do what only the Holy Spirit can really do: remake the human being into one who is able to obey. Yeah, they have rules, but they don't keep them.

As for choice, all Moslems have a choice to do as they wish. Simply, the Moslem must balance how much he or she wishes to be accepted by the other Moslems around vs. how much he or she wants to do ____________. Thus, Moslems in the U.S. might be less rule-bound than Moslems in Pakistan.
