Koehler dog training!!!!! One of the most misunderstood training methods. The funny thing is that we are still useing Koehler Method and still talking about it 45 years after his first book was written. No matter if you liked him or not you have to say that his training method had fast reliable results around any distrations. In or out of the obedience ring.
One thing people really don't understand that Koehler training is about distrations. People look at Koehler training like you are correcting the dog for not sitting that is mean. The thing people didn't see is that you placed the dog into a sitting postion for a week at least 700 times or more before you reinforced the command. You will here Koehler trainers say things like make the dog responsible to his own actions. If you have taught the command fairly why not correct for misobedience?
Koehler trainers will not correct a dog that has not been taught what a command is. Most people that don't like his training have never really talked to a true Koehler trainer and they have not read his book and really try to understand what he is talking about.
Lets just say you take a untrained dog into a Koehler class and in 10 weeks you have a trained dog that is able to be off leash anywhere. Yes off leash concrol in 10 weeks and winning Obedience titles.
Pet Co 24 weeks and $350.00 and still on leash using a treat?????? You do the Math.
If you think all Koehler training is correcting the dog over and over again then you really don't know anything about Koehler training.
I as you can tell I am a big fan of Koehler dog taining and I am my self a Koehler trainer.

No, I don't train using the Koehler Method.

I have a few of the Koehler books and the method has been used successfully on many dogs - when Koehler and people taught by him were using it. I believe that if a lay person with little training experience used the method, it would most likely be abusive to the dog and would not at all be helpful to forming a good working bond with your dog, even if it forces your dog to be obedient.

There are a lot better methods for training out there than the Koehler method, especially if you have a pet dog and aren't training a high drive working dog. I think Koehler over-corrects during the learning phase. It's so much easier to train a dog that's having fun and is being enthusiastic about training, than working with a dog you're basically just forcing to do things.

I have used certain aspects of the Koehler Method, but I find that some of the tactics are not to my liking.

I find Koehler to be outdated. There are much more positive ways to train a dog.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/BNwiW

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.
