I have always had backaches, as long as I can remember. They used to tell me it was growing pains. That was 10 years ago and I still have this problem, and it seems its getting worse. Its the upper back, mostly, right by the shoulder blades. I have a phsical job and get excercise, and am very careful that it is not caused by that...I have been home sick for days now and it hurts worse than usual.
Any ideas or other experiences with this sort of thing? Thanks

Perhaps I wasnt clear; I appologise, I meant I have been home sick with an illness (not because of backache) and doing nothing to hurt or strain my back.

PS:I did not ask anyone to diagnose me without seeing me, thru the internet, I simply hoped for a fresh, neutral perspective, for a new direction in which to look for some cause. Seems to me thats a perfectly rational thing to do.

alternating heat with ice is very effective to take down back pain. Apply a heating pad preferably a moist heating pad for twenty minutes. Wait twenty minutes and then apply a ice pack.

I recommend you see a chiropractor for a thorough evaluation. They are the best at treating chronic back pain.

soak in epsom salts
GOOD chiropractor, massage therapist and ...
Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas (natural muscle relaxers) daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

DO you people who write these questions think that we havea magic eye and extenable arms through a computer screen.
BACK PAIN is hard to diagnose even when you have a patient in front of you
YOu didnt say how old your were and if you had any exrays done.
It could be a neck or even a disc problem
GO AND SEE A DOCTOR IF THAT PAIN IS THAT BAD.. I geta back ache if I dig in the garden.I have just redesigned my front yard and I can tell you I did it all myself and the back gave me curry every night. BUT I have learnt to reconizise when i should stop. PLease go to the doctor and find out if there isan organic cause like a slipped disc or some such thing.then you can go and join a gym if there is no problems and get some back strenghting exercises to do.

you might have pulled all of your muscles....if I were you I would go to the doctor's to get muscle relaxers, which are non-narcotic or you might have pneumonia.....
