I haven't owned a dog in years but my family was ready to bring one into our home. He is some mix of American Bulldog, Boxer and/or Staffie. He's about 4 months old and the person who currently has him says he is very intelligent and good natured. What should I do to get my home "puppy ready"? Should I try to crate train him even though I am home all day and rarely leave my apartment for more than a few hours? Anyone have suggestions on things to buy for him besides the obvious food, collar, leash, etc? Sorry for the long question but I just want to make this transition easy for everyone! If you have any advice please let me know what it is!!!

Good luck new puppies are hard work...by the way crate training is the way to go..that way you will know the puppy is safe and not getting into things he is not suppose to!

Read about the breed or breeds. Look on the internet, read on Cesar Milan, the dog whisperer. Go to Petsmart- they are very good about giving advice. My Lhasa Mix was trained there. The more you know- the better for the dog. 3 main things - dogs need to walk a lot, daily. A dog is better behaved when walked. Pay attention and give it attention. Most of all- YOU are the leader of the pack- not your dog. Read Cesar!

Crate training is good, so is taking him to obedience lessons. Having a puppy is tough. Personally, I prefer to have an adult female dog around to take care of the tough stuff and to keep the puppy from getting mentally strange.

for me the best way to bring a dog home is to make a comfort box fill it with a blankie you dont use and toys and treats one thing that is good is to take a toy from the breeders that he was used to... also dont leave him alone let him know that you are his new mommy dont get me wrong let him run around and explore but also be there to comfort him what i have found is that the first week the person who spends the most time bonding with them is most oftine the one who they love the most

good luck
