Surprisingly, yes. In many jurisdiction, such as office building, restaurants, government buildings, etc., it is illegal to smoke and people have actually been arrested for smoking in them places. This generally would only happen if the person smoking refuses to butt out and the police has to be called. Even then, it would probably be rare that they were actually cuffed and taken to the slammer, but it has happened.

There's no doubt about it. Smoking in a non smoking area is probably the number 1 reason. Or underage smoking. Smoking in a dangerous situation. Gas stations. Several years ago I was manager of a gas station. There was a very belligerent customer who insisted on smoking his cigarette, even though there was a big puddle of gasoline at his feet. I told him if he didn't put it out, I would put it out for him. He sure was surprised when he got a face full of water from the water hose that I was holding. Not another word was said.

i've never personally been arrested but i know of people being given fines for smoking in a bus shelter! There is a law in most of great britain that came out in 2006.You are no longer allowed to smoke in public places eg bars, restaurants, place of work, even bus shelters and phone boxes. This is to lower the cases of cancer in "second hand smokers" those that dont smoke. The law is due to come into force in England some time this year.I think the law is a great idea as there is nothing worse than being in a restaurant trying to enjoy your meal with someone smoking at the table next to you and the cigarett smoke wafting over to you. Also it's better for the children of non-smokers.
