his appetite is very very poor which may be in part due to just having a second hip surgery two days ago because the first surgery was botched by an incompetant vet. the surgeries were only 3 1/2 weeks apart. he is on hills science liver diet

he weighs 9 ponds and is on 12 1/2 mg of Tramadol ( a morphine derivative) for pain every 12 hours. The liver damage was caused by the first vet who did the first surgery and gave him lots and lots of rimadyl for 4 weeks before the surgery and after until i changed vets. and liver damage is the most common serious side effect of rimadyl. all vets were sent a 'Dear Doctor' letter last year from the manufacturer warning of the dangers. my first vet was a blithering idiot and i had no way of knowing all this until i changed to a very good vet. who thinks his appetite will pick up after he recovers from this surgery. she has me giving liquid nutrition, vitamins and nutrical with anoral syringe. She has it covered guys. I want to know if a dog with permanent minor liver damage will feel good all the time and play and enjoy his life. will he be more susseptible to illness. i've been cautioned about anesthesia, medicine & diet problems. do they play and are they happy? any experience?

Gee your dog must have had either a liver problem prior to the surgery or they gave him a mighty large dose as it usually is a cumliative effect over several months (its usally kidney problems that occur acutely form rimadyl).
I would put him on a liver diet such as Hills Canine L/d. These diets :
* HIghly digestable and reduced proteins
* Increase vit K
* Reduced Sodium
* Increased potassium
* Reduced copper
You will need to be careful of all mediations given and watch how they are excreted from the body (via liver or kidney or intestines). Also he is a high anaesthetic risk as well.
He is probably still in pain if not eating - they can give him a narcotic such as Methone. Ask the vet

The liver is an organ that can and will regenerate and heal itself over time. However, there are some chemicals and substances that can cause irreperable damage to the liver. Without knowing exactly what he ingested or how much, it will probably be impossible to guess if he can recover or not. If his liver function starts improving, there is a good chance he will make a full recovery. If his function stays the same or starts diminishing, there may not be much else anyone can do about it. At this point all you can really do is wait.

Since he is so young he may be just fine. Liver damage is noting to sneeze at even for people but with proper diet and your care he should live to be a wonderful pet.
He's probably is a bit of pain from the surgery but you should still call your new vet and talk with him about what you can do to help your pup through this and what if anything you can add to his diet to promote a better appetite. It may just take time for him to feel really hungery again.

Good luck with your pup.

you say minor lack of food isnt helping him , go find a new vet
contact the ASPCA ,and request a vet #, most dog that have liver damage are fine , they may pee more and dont move around so much ,
but take this guy to the vet if you can get some muilt vitamans down him asap the liver damage sounds like a side affect and he get over it

ditch the vet :D go to native remedies.com, or petalive.com and they have herbal cures or remedies for liver (and everything else) i havent been there in a while so i dont remember if that was supposed to repair it... or just make life easier for them.
