So I've known this girl (who happens to be in my circle of friends) for about 3-4 years, but we never really talked untill the beginning of this school year. We've hung out a bit but with a small group of friends, nothing remotely serious. However, since I started talking to her I get half-smirks in the hallway and she will talk with me every once in a while.

Maybe I'm overreacting (I have the same effect on other people), but do you think I should ask her out? Possibly wait another year or so?

I'm rather mature, and this isn't one of those "OMG, she's so hot!" kinda infatuations. Rather I enjoy her company and wish to be by her side when she needs me. I can be fun to be around sometimes, but often times I am too quiet and not much of a social person. This stops me from casually talking to most people.

Anyways, serious replies are appreciated. However if you come up with a witty way to dis me or something, I might give you a thumbs up.

Well if you feel ready and comfortable talking her, just ask her out for a movie or somewhere that both of you might enjoy. Hope you have a great time!

Ask her out. Go for it. You have nothing to lose. If you keep waiting for the right moment or time, it might not ever come. Definitely don't wait a year.

I would suggest making the effort to talk to her more. Even if it means breaking out of your shyness, it's worth it. If you just have a few interesting conversations she will know more about you, and more likely to say yes (if she enjoyed the conversations).

I was like you; you've got to make the effort.
