my mom is hesitant to put me on her policy because she thinks its going to be too much? Would it be cheaper to get my own policy?

Nope it will be lots cheaper to put you on her policy until you have a wreck. Then she will have to pay the price in raised premiums.

Take all the Driving safety classes that are recocnized by the DMV , get the certificates and bring them to the DMV the will add points to your liscense, get licsensed on more than one type of vehicle DO NOT buy a sporty type of car or Bike , if you get a Bike get a Classic style bike Honda CB 750 , 500cc 4 stroke, something like that, you'll have enough power to make the bike fun , but you will be exibiting a safety oriented concience. You have no idea how much the insurance companies look at this stuff. It can make a HUGE difference, that and drive responsibly , 5 years safe driving and positive point on your side , youll be paying 300 dollars a year for Liabilty.

It is best to contact your mother's insurance agent and get quotes for yourself alone and if she adds you to her policy. If you have a drivers license and live under her roof i have heard of companies automatically adding a minor living at home with an active drivers license.
My mom made me purchase my own auto policy. I went with her company though. Farmers was the first company I had. I owned a much older Datsun pick-up as my first vehicle. I chose liability and comprehension. Lucky for me because my first truck was stolen from the mall.
Oh at the time i paid $75.00 a month but i also took drivers education through my school. that paid off until i was in my 20's.
Good grades can also help reduce your rates.
I have a child who will be old enough to drive in the next few years i have already told him he has to work on keeping his grades up etc. he will automatically be penalized because he's male and have higher rates until he's 25 years old.

I don't think it is cheaper, but for your mom's sake, it could be safer. If a teen driver under 18 gets into a huge serious accident and is on his parents policy, they can lose everything they own. ONly because my son refused to drive safely did I require him to get his own insurance.

If you are under the age of 18 you will not be able to get an auto policy on your own. It would be cheeper for your parents to add you to theirs because of the multi car discount. Also if you keep your grades up you also can get a discount. My daughter was added to my policy but only when she had the money to pay off her portion of the policy in full.

Well if you have the financial reserves of a small country it is possible and doable.. but otherwise it is far cheaper to add the kid on to mom and dad's policy.

That's a definite maybe. Check with your insurance people. It often depends on how many cars the family has, and who's in college elsewhere most of the time -- stuff like that.

Have them on your policy and only able to drive 1 vehicle. If it is paid off make it liability only

Not even close!! It just plain costs a lot for teen insurance. That's life. Try getting a job to help her pay for it...that might help.

I BELIEVE THAT IT WOULD BE MUCH CHEAPER IF U HAVE JOINT POLICY WITH YOUR MOTHER, BUT IF U DO CHOICE HAVING YOUR OWN THEN YOU PROBABLY WILL PAY DOUBLE SINCE ITS YOUR FIRST TIME AND YOUR AN UN-EXPERIENCE DRIVER.. TRUST ME... BEEN THERE..
