I was holding my puppy and I noticed something on my upper arm, It was a hookworm, it was barely moving. I thought that I would vomit!!!! I washed my hands and arm with hot soapy water but I am scared out of my mind that it may have passed its larvae into my skin!! I didn't leave it on there more than 30 seconds before I actually could wash it off. My puppy was vaccinated yesterday. The worm looked like it was about to die, but it was still moving!! Please someone, help me calm my nerves. Thanks

The strangest thing is that this was his 4th round of vaccines and his 4th deworming, plus he is on interceptor, I don't understand how he can still have worms. I just pray that I don't get them. It looked a little bigger than a grain of rice!!! YUCK!!!!!!! I'm gonna have bad dreams!!!!

You cannot vaccinate for hookworms, but you can give them a de-wormer. Washing with soap and warm water is the best way to prevent getting infected, and I do not think that you are at risk.

You can't vaccinate for hookworms, or any other intestinal parasites. AND hookworms are microscopic, it is very hard to see them with your naked eye. Most puppies are dewormed for hookworms and roundworms, which are the most common. What your puppy MIGHT have is tapeworms. Puppies are not Normally routinely dewormed for tape worms. These are visible by the naked eye. They look like little pieces of white rice, usually about 1/2 inch long. Owners usually find these little worms around their pets rectum or on their feces. You should describe to your vet what you saw, and possibly bring it in if you can. They will be able to help you more. And if your puppy does have tapeworms, as long as your washed your hands you should be fine. Good Luck with your pup, I hope everything works out.
I also wanted to agree with the person right above me, they could also be roundworms, which are visible by the naked eye. They are longer than tapeworms, they look long and thin, more like spaghetti. And often right after a puppy is dewormed the worms are killed, and have to leave the body, either when the puppy has a bowel movement, or they will sometimes vomit the worms up.

There is no vaccination for hookworms..............
The vet has to give an oral wormer for the hookworms............
The vaccinations that your vet gave was for prevention of differant dog diseases that can kill your puppy. Dont forget you have to take the puppy back to the vet in two to three weeks for booster shots of vaccinations.
As far as your question
you cannot get hookworms from the puppy as long as you do not ingest the worm or it dont get in a sore. BUT>>>>>>>> soapy warm water is not the only thing you should do. A solution of clorox bleach and water is the best. Bleach kills everything and will kill the larvae from the hookworms.

When a human lies on such a spot the Hookworm larva can penetrate the intact skin just as it happens in the dog or cat. Since we are an unnatural host, the larva never make it to the intestine to become blood-sucking adults. They just move around a bit under the skin, die and cause a nasty inflammatory reaction. The result? We get itchy little red bumps on our skin which may form scabs. In the old days, when houses had crawl spaces under them, the pets would often deficate under the house. When the plumber worked on the piping under the house he soon found little itchy bites all over his skin. For this reason, human infection is sometimes called the "plumbers itch". Other names include "creeping eruption" or the more scientific name "cutaneous larva migrans". I'm pretty sure if the hookworm wasn't on your arm long and it didn't enter your skin yo ushould be ok.

Don't do the over the counter stuff. Take a stool sample to the vet and get what type of worm(s) diagnosed. It's not uncommon for puppies to have worms. My puppy had a routine series of 3 wormings 3 weeks apart to make sure they were gone. She's fine now. Just use good handwashing techniques and clean up her poops so she doesn't get re-infected. No reason for her to be kept outside. Once she gets the deworming medication you'll likely see lots in her poop it's normal.

Normally one cannot see hookworms except under microscope. That is why vets do a fecal to check for all the nasties pups can have. I assume she was dewormed at the vet plus her shot. Why do you think it was a hookworm? After deworming the pup will pass the normally dead worms for a few days. Normally pups are dewormed 2-3 times when they get their puppy shots.
I doubt you have any reason to be concerned. Washing was good of course. You can see round worms (like spaghetti) and tape worms(white rice, maggot looking) with naked eye.
Don't panic.

Relax,
1) you cant see hookworm with the naked eye, roundworm yes.
unless you eat it you wont get it.
2) They dont vaccinate for worms. Worming treatments are done for dogs to kill the worms.
3)Was your pup wormed yesterday that might be whats happening the dying worms are coming out.

For the hook worm to get into you, you would have had to ingest it or you would have to have an open sore for it to get into. Otherwise, do not worry about it.
You did the right thing buy washing with soap and water. Not a bad idea to give the Pup a bath too.
