1) The original six letter word is "dozens". When you subtract one (letter "s") the word now becomes "dozen" which is equal to "12".

2) The letter "Q". (Start with 4 letters in a row from the alphabet and the the pattern begins: Skip 3 letters, list 1 letter, skip 1 letter, list 1 letter, skip 3 letters, list 1 letter, skip 1 letter, list 1 letter (in this case, "Q")


3) Since the boat was full of people, there were much more than one single person (meaning quantity, not marital status.)

4) You'd light the candle that is in your hand and easier to see in the dark. Then, once the candle is lit, you can walk to the stove without possibly tripping and light the wood burning stove safely and correctly.

5) A total eclipse of the Sun.

6) He should have been smart enough to say "1.5" since the doorman made a mistake by not saying "3" (the pattern was the doorman saying a number, the member replying 1/2 of that number, and to start the new cycle, the doorman repeats the correct answer from the last admitted member) ... and so on, and so on ...
