If you're using a large potato I'd say 350 for about an hour....although I usually jack up the heat to 400 and cook for slightly less than an hour. After about 45 minutes check it; when it's done the skin should feel crisp and the flesh underneath it should feel soft.
Note that this is for baked potato cooked directly in the oven -- coat lightly with canola oil, sprinkle kosher salt on it, and place directly on the oven rack. If you cook it differently -- ie if you cover the potato in foil, which essentially steams the potato -- the skin won't get crisp, and I don't know what the cooking time would be. If you haven't tried them the way I've described, by all means, do -- you'll never go back to foil-wrapped potatoes again!

Wash and bake in an oven 350 to 400 degrees for one hour. Be sure to prick the skins a couple of times with a fork first. I usually bake mine at 400 degrees for an hour.....and just lay the large potatoes on the oven rack and bake. That way the skin is hard and not soft and mushy.

OK. . let's make this as simple as possible . Forget about 'pricking' the potato and all the rest .
Wrap potato in foil .
Put in oven at 350-400 .
Cook approx. 45 min to 1 hour .
To check for doneness, simply hold and squeeze . If it's soft, it's done .
That's it !! And it'll stay hot for a long time so you don't have to worry about the timing on the rest of your dinner !!

An hour at 350, or
Microwave it for four minutes, then wrap in foil and let them sit for ten minutes. The steam will cook the potato. Not baked but close.

I also prefer the oven baked, no foil method but if you do cook in the microwave wrap the taters in a wet paper towel first.
To keep them warm before serving, {after cooking} just pop on a plate & cover with a large bowl.

I do them in the micro at full power for one min per ounce, so 8 ounce would be 8 mins, if you do two or more you use the first 8 mins but only had 4 mins for each of the rest, so 3, 8 ounce spuds would take 16 mins. Hope you understood that lol, when they done split them put you topping on and micro for as long as it takes for the topping to be hot, usually about 2 mins. Enjoy.

Best way....
Scrub dirt off potato (not too hard)
While wet, prick skin all over with steak knife or fork (just kind of stab it a little all around it)
Place in a pre heated oven, 425 degrees (do not wrap in foil) for an hour.

If it's a large one and you want to microwave it, cut just a tip off or make a little slice in it with a knife and cook it for around 6 minutes - should do it. I do that all the time.
