If I punch air like boxing, with heavy gloves on, will it build my chest?

And what will it do to it?

It would do the same thing for you as if you didn't have the gloves on. I've wrote about this before here, when you shadowbox and it's done properly you can get a tremendous workout as long as you're doing it right, you have to snap your punches, locking your elbows as you throw. Just because there isn't a target doesn't mean you're not throwing at one.

If you punch correctly you'll build you endurance and work on your timing and your countering ability. As far as building muscle, you ain't going to do it just by shadow boxing with "Heavy" gloves on.

Can you develop a home-run swing without hitting a ball? You can play baseball, you can not play boxing. Thanks for the question Baseball 4 life.

Probably nothing.

If, however, you are referring to shadow boxing, you would do well to use smaller gloves or no gloves at all. Some weightlifting is recommended but don't overdo it. Pushups, leg lifts, pull ups, running and working the heavy bag are highly recommended. Diet is important too. Lighten up on the fried foods and fatty snacks. Meat, potatoes, and vegetables. Lots of water. You want lean muscle. Power punching comes from the ability to snap your punches while keeping your body moving.

Knockout power is a gift. Some have it, some don't.

You mean like shadow boxing? No it probably won't do much for your muscles. You should do some pushups or bench press if your trying to build your chest.

Nope. But it will strengthen your arms, add power to your punches and help improve your stamina. If you wish to build your chest do bench presses and push-ups.
