I have this on-campus job where I have to call alums and ask if they would consider giving a donation to student scholarships. What I don't understand is--why some feel the need to start cursing on the phone at you or being plainly rude. No one is making them do it. In fact, a simple "No thank you" would suffice. Another thing they forget is that not only am I NOT making them donate...it's also not my fault that I call them. It's my job and I have to do it...It's was the only job that was left on campus and I sorely need the money.... and ppl are STILL rude.
I mean..Our script is very nice and if a person say's no we say "thank you for your consideration" and say goodbye.

Especially over the phone, people can be very rude and inconsiderate. It's as though they don't consider the voice on the other end an actual living, breathing human being - one that has feelings like everyone else!!

It is sad. It would be nice if people would just realize that its not going to hurt them to be polite to the person on the other end of the call. If only they would know how good it makes you feel inside when you make someone smile over the phone! You can actually hear the smile!!!

The fundamental problem is that the heart of your solicitation, you're still telemarketing. It doesn't matter that it's for a good cause - you're still asking for money. No matter what your script says, people hear only one thing: "Blah blah blah give us your money blah blah blah".

Now figure by the time you reach people they've just come home from work, or are trying to gather the kids, or cook, or simply relax. The phone rings and they pick it up from force of habit, expecting it to be someone they want/need to talk to. Then they hear "Blah blah blah give us your money..."

These people are probably not always rude and mean. But you're catching them at the worst possible moment, intruding on their routine, making them stop and actively put effort to acknowledging you, then you ask for money. It will make people upset.

You should not take it personally. You could be trying to cure cancer, it would be the same thing. It has nothing to do with you, or your script, or your university. It has to do with asking for money at the wrong time in the worst way.

I understand exactly what you are talking about. Unfortuantely, you have several factors that come into play. One of them is upbringing, losing sight that we are all equals as human beings, situational status......basically I like to call it emotional retardation. You don't see the animal kingdom screwing over their fellow species for a car, promotion, etc. They simply take what is necessary to survive. Know this though, I am one of those people that understand having to work hard for a living, so thank you for doing what you do and know that someone out there heard you.

I think people feel if they wanted to donate to a cause then they'd go and donate. They wouldn't need someone to call and ask for the money. That's they joy of being a telemarketer. Hang in there and it's nothing against you personally...just your job.

I think people are sick of other people trying to take money off them all the time, and there are so many scams out there.

I understand where these people are coming from but there is a nicer way to say no on the phone.

It is still a telemarketing call ... you are still calling someone and asking them to give up their hard earned cash. People don't like being solicited and they do feel they can be rude when they are not face to face.

Be nice as you have been. Your job is tough ... I did it in college for a bit also. I would like to say it gets better, but it doesn't.

To answer your puzzle. It is YOU that is invading their "space". Telephone solicitations are intrusive, even if they are legal; therefore, it is just part of your job, and what you are getting paid to do. Most people try every way they can to stop these people from interrupting our lives, but we have little recourse.
So, from now on realize YOU are the problem, not them and they have every right to be rude to you if you are disturbing their lives.

Sorry, dear.

Aw, I'm sorry people are so rude to you.Maybe get a little kitten or bird to make you feel better when you come home from an unfair day at work.

That is very rude. However, I think that is just something you will have to put up with in that crummy job. It is disgusting to have to call these rude people, but at least you are getting paid for it.

Rudeness seems the norm in today's society. Society thinks it's cool to be rude and discourteous. Go anywhere ie...wait in line anywhere and listen to people. "Why are we waiting so long, this place sucks! Does that person know what their doing?" "Look at that fat person!" I have heard people call others that thing. "What does that thing want?" "Look at that thing. Why is it sitting next to us?!?" Society does not want to become the victim so they attack, with rude vicious behaviour.
