when you turn to a channel that isn't showing anything but white/gray and black dots ...?

what do you call those white/gray and black dots??

White noise. When your television receives no signal, it generates white noise to protect the picture tube. Modern tv's have replaced this with a blue screen, as it is more pleasant, less radioactive and noiseless.
