My hair is naturally blonde, why are my roots brown?

as you get older the shade of your hair will get darker, it starts about the time you hit puberty and stops about the time you hit your mid 20's you really notice it most in people with blonde hair. also if you spend alot of time in the sun then stop (like get a job indoors or start back to school after summer break) it seems to have roots because the sun will lighten it alot.
