when it's empty, the muscles of the stomach wall will rub up on eachother, and air that gets trapped makes noise as it is released

Your stomach gurgles because of the food that you have digested. When it makes that noise, its usually an indication that you need to eat, or it could mean that its breaking down acids from the foods, which then is turned into a gas.

If there's no food in your stomach, it doesn't have anything to digest, so it just digests air. That's when it makes the gurgling.

It's digesting food I think. That, and you are hungry, your tummy is empty and it wants more food.
Mine always makes heaps of noise, especially first thing in the morning when I start eating. It's like it sees this food and says, "yay!".
