All animal and plant life is drawn to the suns rays. Notice how plants follow the Sun to catch the rays ? So,plants have an innate attraction for solar energy. Some animals like snakes and lizards use the Sun to heat up their bodies.
Early humans probably figured out that the Sun could be used to dry fish and meat and even fry it.

Archamedes- Knew of the power that could be harnesed from the sun and had tried to use it as a "super weapon" or so the Myth goes. but other great scientist through out time knew of the power generated by the sun and used it in various ways...

reptiles .they use it to digest their food ,already for millions of years.
and Acient Central Americans like the Olmecs ,knew how to grind lenses to concentrate the suns power
knowledge of solar power existed at the dawn of ocupation of this planet by intelligent beings
maybe not always human
