You only use usted when you`re talking to someone very important, like an old person, a professor, a doctor....

while talking to a friend you would say ¿cómo estás tu?
but if you`re talking to a professor you would say ¿cómo está usted? the word usted changes the verb that you would use with tu in any sentence.

usted is a formal form of you. For example a teacher would say 'tu' to you but you would use 'usted' to her. It is like a sign of respect. Tu is more of a friendly way to say 'you'.

Usted is a polite singular form of "you". You would use it with strangers, especially elders. You would not use it when talking to a friend or family member or if someone was robbing you (I remember the teacher actually telling us this in school!).

In spanish you can use Usted, Tu and Vos (in some countries) to refer to the second person singular "You"
Usted is used in formal contexts, and when you and your interlocutor have a distant relationship (ie. doctor/patient, teacher/student, employer/employee, etc). On the other hand, tu and vos is used when speaker/ writer and hearer/reader have a close relationship (ie. friends, schoolmates, sisters, etc)

usted is the formal form of "you"....like "professor...could you give me the test"...you would be saying "you"...but formally. If it's in the present form....which i'm assuming it is...then you use it the same way you would use the el/ella form.
EXAMPLE: comer: usted form->come; tener, usted form-> tiene
