an episode is in reference to when you start being manic and you stop. Say your really happy bouncing off the walls, and think you can do anything. Then you swing drastically into the next stage of bi-polar which is severely depressed, hopeless and possibly suicidal. That is an example of an episode. I use to have those symptoms, and was mis-diagnosed as having bi-polar disorder, I later found out I have a hormone deficianacy. But I remember very clearly what it felt like to be in that state of mind. Its very hard, and even harder to keep your mood stable and not go off in one extreme or the other.

A lot of people with bipolar have long periods of time with no symptoms at all, or few symptoms. That;s called euthymia. Then when they are sick, they are having an episode of illness. A lot of people with bipolar have no euthymic period, they are always sick, so I don't think you'd really use the word episode in that type of bipolar. That's my impression of the use of the term.
