can be if both kids and dogs are taught how to treat each other. Also research the breed, certain breeds are better to have around children than others. Dogs in the herding group tend to picture kids as livestock and might want to herd them, some smaller toy breeds are less tolerable of kids. Do your research once you find a breed that catches your eye.

My 3 kids grew up with a mutt. A Lab Border Collie mix. She used to pull them in a sled. Chase foul balls into the deep grass. She was the "out fielder" when my boys and the neighbor kids would play baseball in the back yard. She would "play" foot ball and tackle who ever had the ball. By tugging the pant leg, lost a few pair of jeans over the years. That "free" dog after many hundreds in vet bills for check ups and shots. Was the best thing for the boys. She is my pal now at 14 now that the boys are 24 and 21. After she was no longer a cute fuzz ball my daughter was no longer interested. That is the thing to watch out for. A dog is a long term commitment

It depends how old your kids are. If they are old enough you should take the whole family to adopt a dog from the shelter because they always have a real nice setup for interaction with the animal and perspective families. Also shelters run all kinds of test with the dogs to see if they are good with kids and families, along with other pets.

Dogs are great! I always had a dog in my life. It depends on how the dog will be treated, walked, cared for-daily. I would get a little dog, like a Peke/Mix, Spaniel, a small mixed breed. It could be a teaching tool too---to teach your children how to care for a dog, each and every day---no matter what.

Oh yea dogs are playful and fun so they will have someone to play with. A dog could teach a child to be responsible by haveing to learn to feed it a bathe the dog. But if you are not ready for a dog i would wait intill you are. Good luck!~!~
P.S to find a puppie or dog go to puppies.com they are cute and cheap.

Yes! Dogs aid in teaching kids responsibility and are also great for your kids to talk to if they need a friend.

They're also good for older people!
