First of all, tell her that the cat will be spayed so they can't get pregnant for a female, or neutered for a male so they won't want to go out at night fighting & looking for a female and spraying your house with a stinky marking liquid their body makes.

How responsible are you around the house? Does mom have to nag you to help with chores & clean your room, do your homework? That alone will tell your mom if you are old enough & responsible enough to own a cat & care for it properly.

Don't count on getting your way if she has to remind you all the time to do your chores!

Taking care of a pet is a HUGE responsibility, changing the catbox {I love my cats but HATE this part!} feeding them, cleaning their dishes, the cost of shots & health visits, flea medication, toys, toys toys!!! {and more toys}

If you have a job and can earn the money for all this & will care for the cat ALL the time then maybe she will give in =) If you don't have a job then volunteer to do something for her in exchange for the cost of the cats care. {and keep your word!}

Maybe you can sign an agreement with her that you will clean the litterbox EVERY day, and do what she says needs to done without complaint.

Remember that a pet isn't a toy, you can't decide you are tired of it next week and just forget about it. A cat or dog is not like a hamster, they will be in your face and in your heart for most likely 15 years!! The best friend you will ever have.

And I just want to say that I am very proud of you for volunteering to help the animals, that is a wonderful thing for you to do at your age!!

PS Please write and let us know if you get the kitty!

Parents have their reasons, and if you can't convince her to say yes, there's not really much you can do to get a cat into the house. Any tricks or ploys will just end up with a mad mom and when you get punished, the cat will get punished too, which is unfair to the cat.

I don't think that making a deal with your mom is a good idea either. Even if you come through and she lets you get the cat, it's only 4 or 5 years until you leave for college. And then, that's your MOM'S cat. 4 or 5 years is a small portion of a cat's lifespan. If she doesn't want it, it's not fair to her or, again, to the cat.

If I were you, I would beg mom to let you volunteer at the shelter. They desperately need volunteers to help brush cats, socialize kittens and ferals, clean litterboxes, do laundry, etc. If you can't have your own cat, knowing you're making a big difference in improving the lives of so many down-on-their-luck kitties should make you feel great!

Your interest in donations to the animal shelter was a great charity for you to help and this shows you are a truly, caring person. Care of a cat is great fun if one is organized and able to tend to the needs of the animal without being reminded to do so. A cat will need someone to feed it up to two times daily, change it's water, comb and brush it's hair, clean it's teeth and change the litter pan at least once or twice a week. Do you ever take out the trash or garbage at home, prepare your own meals or keep your own room neat and clean? Perhaps your mother believes that your having a cat will be too much of a demand upon your time or might ruin some element of your daily routine: school, homework, socializing with friends, household chores, etcetera. It could be that when you demonstrate to her that you are independent enough to take care of your own place, she might feel that you will be ready for the responsibility to care for a live animal in addition to the things you already have to do. Best wishes.

You can also sponsor the cat. That means donate some money for the cat so they'll make sure that she's taken care off (and not put to sleep).

When I adopted my cat, there was another cat that I also really liked. But I couldn't take two cats. So I donated 25 dollars for the other cat to feed her and for her general care.

Or you could volunteer at the shelter once a week or so. They'll be very grateful for the help!

I was in the same situation just a few weeks ago! What I did was made a deal with my mom. She got me a cat and I took care of it all by myself and I would do something she really wanted me to do. I'm 13 also and this worked for me. I also bet that if you have her come see it then she might even want it a bit more (since she already does a little). Her seeing it and actually knowing who it is might make her want it even more. I've wanted one since november and am getting my cat from a rescue group soon. the most important thing is...never, never give up no matter how long it takes! look where it got me =]

I suggest that if your mom says no, then its no. It's very good of you to give to the shelter & want to take of them, take your mom to the shelter with you and let her see for herself if she'd like a cat. There are a lot of responabilaties with an animal & expences. Hope you can get your kitty.

Well, convincing parents to get a pet is tricky. You might not be able to convince your mom. The best way I've known to convince people in general is to get them to hold the pet. Other than that.....there's not a lot you can do.

Make sure the cat has no problems when you get it, like worms you would have to treat your self.

I adopted a puppy from a shelter here and It had worms. Thye neglected to inform me of this when i asked about her. (no longer have her cause of a serious thing she got into and hubby made it clear to get her out)

You are only 13. I know, we always had dogs.Maybe you could tell your mom---if I concentrate on my school work this year and really do well----then next year can I get a kitten, and I promise to keep my grades up.

Show your parents that you have responsibility taking care of animals. Maybe then, they would let you adopt one
