The UK & us had so many men away on military that there insuffcient men to fill the job vavancies in the industries and women could fill the vacancies.

1/ when you look at the old movies and docu's note the lack of safety gear.
2/ it shows you how easy it was on the production line, which was male territory at the time
3/most of all, the work was BORING.
Imagine loading magazines with rounds all day, or for that matter assembling them

From what I remember from my old history lessons from school, with the war the men were fewer and fewer in the industries, so women had to work there to contribute to the effort of war.
