It's not. It's the number of man. Alot of the confusion is the result of legitimate arguments against all the different translations that Satan has inspired to muddy the waters of human understanding. Hellenistic Jews(Greek speaking Jews), as all the disciples were, did not use the indefinite article "a" in their informal writing. An old, Messianic Jewish friend of mine said the proper rendering of Revelation 13:18 is "for it is the number of man: and his number is 666", not "the number of A man".He further explained that in Jewish culture, numbers had symbolic meaning beyond their cardinal values. The number 6 was chosen because of its particular symbolic meaning. If you look up the word six in a good dictionary and go to the bottom where it says "shared meaning element", you'll see that it means "In disagreement, "in dispute", "in chaos". Three sixes are used to describe man because, as man was created in God's Triune image, man has a triune existence as well. The three sixes are simply meant to describe the fallen nature of our triune existence. When you think about it in this way, the whole thing really comes together.

If there was no number between 665 and 667 all of mathematics would fall apart, at least involving any number above 665. If people want to fear it as the mark of the beast, that's fine but don't move just because it's your home address or your locker number in high school.. That's superstition.

Personally, I believe that it's the numerical value of NERO CAESAR (not sure if I spelt that correctly). He was the Anti-Christ persecuting Christians at the time when the Book of Revelations was written. He had his face on the money, he had tried to claim himself as a deity, and he had possession of Israel..

To anyone who says that it's the number for man, why be so confusing about it?? It states in the Bible that it's the mark of the beast.!! When someone raises the question, you pin it on man and his supposed dependency on a particular belief system. How convenient!!!!
