We want to install 12x12 floor tiles (not the self stick ones) onto our old formica countertop. What adhesive should we use to secure the tiles?

You should trash the old couter top and use 3/4" plywood. There is no point in saving it, especially if it has a molded backsplash and rounded nosing. Much easier to start fresh.

I would not apply the tiles directly to the formica. Cover the entire counter (over the formica) with 1/4 inch Hardi-Backer, using screws.

Then you will have a cement-based substrate, so you can proceed with regular thinset and grout.

I would use a floor mastic (not a thinset or cement based product... a glue). You gotta groove up the old top first though. run a grinder over it like you hate it.... put some grooves in it to hold the glue. Checkerboard shapes... criss-crossed... Stick 'em down, grout 'em up and enjoy he new look. :)

there is a product called "hard as nails" it comes in a caulking tube, it works on any surface, i remodeled my kitchen with wall tiles, it has held for many years.
