Sometimes by holding a flash light up behind the lip and shining hte light through the lip will highlight some of the faded letters or numbers.
I have had to help the vet do this when the horse was sedated for a dental and we got the numbers that way. It does not always work and it is easier to do with the horse sedated lightly.
It takes two people.

Glasses? Just kidding. Find some old ranch hand, depends on where you live, but the southwest is full of em, and they are pretty familair with all types of branding, even sending them a digital photo would work.
