The answers so far have more or less described what it's supposed to be. To me the outstanding point is how The God of Israel kills off the Egyptian children - so much for innocence.

One strange aspect to this is that the Egyptians, who often recorded even local gossip, made no mention of the events anywhere we've found yet. I'm not saying we won't find it, but it seems strange that such a cataclysmic event, which supposedly even cost Egypt a chunk of its army, and so much death and destruction, has never shown up in any of the gazillions of Egyptian renditions of any period.

During a famine, Jacob (Israel) and his sons and extended family went down to Egypt where they had found their "lost" brother Joseph second in command to the Pharaoh. The Israelites stayed there for about 400 years and gradually turned from guests to slaves. A leader, Moses, who himself had been raised in the household of the Pharaoh, arranged to have the Israelites released from captivity, and led them back to their ancient land. This return from Egypt is called the Exodus.

There's much more, of a religious nature (which I believe in) to this story, but that's the short version.

Ignore the following beccuase i would be ranting:

HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW ABOUT THE EXODUS!?!?!?!!?

Ok, you can stop ignoring - i have officially calmed down :)

Anyways, the exodus was basically when God let Moses and the Isrealites to be freed fromthe wrath of Egyptian slavery. for more information, just google "exodus"

When Pharoh let the ensalved Jews leave Egypt, led by Moses. Read about it in the Bible, or watch the movie "The Ten Commandments", (movie about 1954, or so, Cecil B. DeMille)

They left Egypt to go to the Land their G-d promised them.

In the bible it was the freeing of the jews from service to the Egyptians.
In reality it was a myth created to inspire as small relatively weak Kingdom with some quite large powerful neighbours.
